Bandai is reviving their Digimon Card Battle web video series with a four-episode set titled “DigiCa Celebrity Invasion”, featuring celebrity guests challenging the show’s co-hosts to matches.

The first episode in the series discussed several upcoming products, including the Tamer’s Evolution Box and Booster Set 3: UNION IMPACT. While much of it was repeating known information, one new reveal did come of this: the highly anticipated Demon Lord Lilithmon, first teased in V Jump magazine two months prior.

UNION IMPACT will launch in Japan October 30th, 2020. The cards from it will be combined with NEW EVOLUTION and ULTIMATE POWER for the English format, spread across Special Boosters 1.0 and 1.5.

Bandai announced today that an English localization of the 2020 Digimon Card Game will launch in January 2021, with a “special booster” that combines Booster Set 1: NEW EVOLUTION, Booster Set 2: ULTIMATE POWER, and Booster Set 3: UNION IMPACT into a single 187-card base set titled Special Booster 1.0.

Printing only 187 cards from those three sets leaves out 152 cards, which will be included in a follow-up Special Booster, 1.5. Bandai put out an official Facebook page for the game, along with a new “world.digimoncard.com” domain, different from the “en.digimoncard.com” domain used for the game’s Asian-English website.

Special Booster 1.0 booster packs have double the number of cards of a Japanese pack, with 12 cards in every pack. Booster boxes still contain 24 packs each, for a total of 288 cards per box. It has not been stated how many boxes are in one wholesale carton, but if it’s also 12 boxes as per the Japanese edition, then that’s 3,456 cards per carton—exactly double the number of cards in a Japanese carton. The price per pack is also doubled from the Japanese release, $3.99 before tax versus 180 yen.

The Starter Decks Gaia Red, Cocytus Blue, and Heaven’s Yellow will launch in English simultaneous to the Special Booster. A special prerelease sale will be held at select stores in November 2020 where all four products will be available ahead of their street date. An English version of the tutorial app is also in the works.

The Starter Decks do change the game’s recommended age rating—in Japan the decks are labeled for ages 9 and up, while in North America the decks are labeled for ages 6 and up.

The launch trailer for the English card game notably uses the name “Tai Kamiya” for Yagami Taichi, even though the official subtitles for the 2020 Digimon Adventure: anime use “Taichi Yagami”—the card game preserves a 20-year-old misreading of the 八神 kanji.

The 2020 anime reboot leaves Taichi’s name uncensored.

However, the Starter Deck names have gone unchanged, despite having dubbed equivalents—Gaia Red, Cocytus Blue, and Heaven’s Yellow are named after their respective Digimon’s attacks Gaia Force, Cocytus Breath, and Heaven’s Knuckle, which are normally dubbed as Terra Force, Metal Wolf Claw, and Hand of Fate.

As a translation of the Japanese game, the Digimon Card Network will continue to use the correct names.

Chinese fan 泽戍绯_Honowo23 posted a leaked page from an upcoming magazine article on the 2020 Digimon TCG to Chinese social media site Weibo, revealing that Booster Set 3: UNION IMPACT will contain cards featuring Goddramon, Saint Galgomon, and Lopmon.

The article highlights that these Digimon were chosen for their popularity, and also restates that UNION IMPACT focuses on Jogress evolutions that can evolve from either of two different colors. Paildramon and Mastemon’s art, previously featured in V Jump magazine, is also reused for the issue, and the article also reconfirms that the set will featuer Digimon with effects that activate when they are revealed from the Security Area.

The bottom of the page contains a small blurb about the ongoing Tamer Battle official tournaments being held at card shops in Japan, and the promo pack participation prize.

The page appears to be from the next issue of Weekly Shounen Jump (out September 7th) which is printed in China and then shipped to Japan. Only a few of Japan’s hobby magazines cover Digimon TCG news at this time: V Jump, Weekly Shounen Jump, and the bi-monthly magazines Saikyou Jump and Card Gamer.

The fifteenth episode of Bandai’s FUN! DigiCa YouTube series pits hosts Hideyoshi and Cody against each other in an unusually short remote match, using decks made from doubled-up Starter Decks with assorted promotional cards. The match highlights the importance of low-level Digimon to the game—a lack of Level 3s early on results in Hideyoshi struggling as Cody sets up an extremely threatening War Greymon.

On the fourteenth episode of Bandai’s FUN! DigiCa YouTube series, hosts Hideyoshi and Cody revealed six alternate artwork prints of Booster 1: NEW EVOLUTION‘s Super Rares, alongside the set’s two Secret Rares: a V-dramon and a Virus Metal Greymon. Both Digimon are particularly evocative for old school Digimon fans, as the viral Metal Greymon was an early franchise mascot used in the 1990s virtual pets and original Digimon World video game, while V-dramon starred in the Digimon V-Tamer 01 manga and served as a mascot for Digimon World 2.

The set’s alternate artwork cards cut away the borders of the frame so that the card artwork encompasses the entire space of the card. Their distribution rate was not stated, but they are likely rarer than the standard Super Rares.

V-Tamer 01 will be having a special crossover manga chapter with the 2020 Digimon Adventure: anime reboot, though the anime is currently on hiatus as a result of Coronavirus closures.

Holy Angemon was originally created for a 1998 chapter of the Digimon Adventure V-Tamer 01 manga, and a redesigned version later appeared in the 1999 Digital Monster Card Game, before being reused in the original Digimon Adventure anime as Patamon’s Perfect-level form.
