退化 taika lit. “degeneration; retrogression”

Discard the highest X cards on the opposing Digimon’s stack. If it runs out of Evolution Sources, or if it becomes a Level 3 Digimon, no more cards can be discarded.”

A keyword exclusive to Black Digimon. When a Digimon is inflicted with <<Degenerate X>> the topmost cards on its stack are removed, equal to X. For example, <<Degenerate 2>> removes the topmost 2 cards; a Metal Greymon with a Greymon, Agumon, and Koromon in its Evolution Sources, would turn back into an Agumon. The removed cards are then discarded.

A Digimon cannot be degenerated if it has no Evolution Sources or if it is a Level 3 Digimon. If a Digimon runs out of Evolution Sources or becomes Level 3 while being degenerated, the degeneration will stop. For example, a Greymon with Agumon and Koromon in its Sources hit with <<Degenerate 2>> will become Agumon and not degenerate further. Similarly, a Holy Angemon with only a Unimon in its Sources hit with <<Degenerate 2>> will simply become Unimon.

Mechanically, <<Degenerate>> originates from the Digimon Story games on the Nintendo DS, where it was also called “degenerate.”

Hell’s Grenade, an Option Card which inflicts <<Degenerate 1>>.
